The Importance of Spaying Your Pet

What is spaying?

Spaying is when veterinarians surgically remove the reproductive organs from your female companion. This procedure requires your pet to undergo general anesthesia. Our clinic performs two surgical techniques, “ovariectomy” – removal of the ovaries and “ovariohysterectomy” – removal of the ovaries and uterus. These are two very common techniques and are performed on a daily basis here at our clinic. Spaying your feline friend:

Spaying your pet has many medical benefits. Spaying your female companion can help prevent uterine infections as well as breast tumours. When you spay your pet, she will be unable to go into heat. Intact females usually go into heat for four to five days, every three weeks. Female cats will yowl, and urinate more frequently… sometimes all over your house! Spaying your pet will also help with the homelessness crisis. Cats are one of the main stray animals. 3.4 million cats enter shelters every year, and by spaying your cat, this will help cut back on this total.

Spaying your canine companion:

Spaying your female companion is highly recommended. Veterinarians prefer that this is done before their first heat cycle. This is especially important to help prevent uterine infections and breast tumours just like our feline friends. Intact female dogs will go into heat every six months for about three weeks. During this time, your female’s vulva will swell and she will have a bloody discharge coming from her vulva.
