Puppy Classes

We use progressive reinforcement training methods in comfortable, pet-friendly environments with an emphasis on fun and learning. Our puppy program focuses on socialization and how to help you and your puppy to develop and reinforce healthy, desirable behaviours. Progressive reinforcement training essentially means teaching animals by rewarding desired behaviours and excluding the intentional use of physical or psychological intimidations.

Do you offer private training/counseling

Pet Parenting can be challenging at the best of times and let’s face it, with all the information out there it can be difficult to know what will work for you and your pet. If you feel you need help with more accurate or more difficult behaviour issues like mouthing, excessive barking, human and dog aggression, separation anxiety, obsessive-compulsive behaviours, you can schedule a behaviour consult with one of our veterinarians.

When should my puppy start school?

Your puppy can start our puppy classes as young as 9 weeks and as old as 21 weeks. We require that you have had the puppy in the home for a minimum of ten days before starting classes.

Where do you offer socialization classes?

Classes are currently being held here at the clinic weekly. Interested in joining? Contact us at trainning@petfocus.ca to register.

What are the training methods used to train puppies?

At PetWorks we use operant conditions behaviour analysis (OCBA) training methods, commonly referred to as ‘clicker training’ or positive reinforcement training.

The program is based on progressive reinforcement training, which essentially means teaching animals by rewarding desired behaviours and excluding the intentional use of physical or psychological intimidations. The program will focus on: socialization, how dogs learn, preventing resource guarding, accepting handling and restraint, preventing separation anxiety, understanding canine body language, play biting/mouthing, nail trims, housetraining, walking on a loose leash, handling the collar, “down” and “come when called”

Do classes take dogs from puppyhood to advanced obedience?

We currently offer both the focus on puppy class and level one obedience. To speak to one of our trainers about your pet’s enrollment, please contact us at 902-435-2444

What's That I See?

Have you ever seen those little rice grains in your pet’s stool or around their bottom? Well, most pets do not eat rice for dinner, did you know that what you are seeing is called tapeworms, yuck. These little guys are an intestinal parasite contracted by ingesting external parasites - usually fleas!
