Dog Euthanasia

No dog owner wants to think of the day when they have to say goodbye to their friend. We are here to provide assistance and advice in caring for your dog, in particular through this challenging time.

What is pet euthanasia and how do I know when it’s the right time?

Euthanasia, is the process of ending a life peacefully to prevent further suffering.
Your veterinarian wants to help your pet live as long and happy a life as they can. But often, near the end, a dog may no longer be able to enjoy the things they used to, such as eating with a healthy appetite, going for long walks, or sleeping comfortably through the night. When there are more bad days than good ones, euthanasia is usually the best option. Your veterinarian will help you decide when the time is right. When you bring your pet in for euthanasia, you are free to stay or leave for whichever parts of the procedure you wish. There is no wrong way to do this, and we want to make you as comfortable as we can. Please feel free to ask our staff any questions you may have.

Can I say goodbye to my pet in the comfort of our home?

While euthanasia is often performed in the veterinary clinic, we do offer house call services, so you can say goodbye to your pet in the comfort of your home.

What drug is used?

Euthanasia is performed by injecting a large dose of an anesthetic drug into the dog’s vein.
It immediately causes unconsciousness, just as it would in anesthesia for surgery. The dog is completely unaware of what is happening and feels no pain. The drug then shuts down the rest of the body’s systems. It all happens very quickly and quietly. Afterwards, you are free to spend as much time with your pet as you wish.
