The Truth About Pet Food By-Products

By-Product: A secondary product produced in addition to the principle product, according to the AAFCO Official Publication 2008.

Myth: Pet foods containing ingredients listed as “by-products” are inferior.

Truth: By-products are common ingredients in both human and pet food. A by-product is simple something produced in the making of something else.

By-products come from many different common ingredients that can be found in many food human and pet alike.

Vitamin E is a by-product of soybeans and vegetable oils such as flaxseed oil, rice bran oil, corn oil and soy oil are by-products extracted from the seeds that are processed for consumtion purposes.

By-products are sometimes listed as an ingredient in foods as well.

Pork, chicken, and beef liver are internal organs of animals used for human comsumption. Beet pulp is dried residue from sugar beets and tomato pomace comes from tomato skins, pulp and seeds.

Q: What do vitamin E, beef bouillon and lamb meal have in common?
A: They’re all by-products!

Monday, Thursday: 7:15 am - 9:00 pm
Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 7:15 am - 8:00 pm
Saturday: CLOSED
Sunday: CLOSED
