Senior Wellness For Your Pet

Bringing your senior pet in for an annual wellness checkup and regular diagnostics can reassure you that your dog or cat is healthy. It can also help us to detect hidden diseases or conditions early. Early detection can improve the prognosis of many diseases, keep medical costs down, and help your pet live longer. Many dogs and cats are good at hiding signs that something is wrong, so subtle changes in their behaviour or health might be easy to overlook. Also, depending on the disease, some pets don’t show any signs and symptoms until it has become too much on their body to handle.

Dogs and cats age quicker than humans, so it is even more crucial for our companion animals to receive regular exams. In addition, the risks of arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, dental disease, kidney disease and liver problems all increase with age. During your pet’s wellness exam, we will perform a full nose to tip of tail examination, we will also make sure your pet receives appropriate vaccines and preventives (dewormer, flea/tick prevention). We will perform a diagnostic workup, which may include blood, fecal, and urinalysis to check for internal parasites or underlying diseases/condition markers. We also may recommend that your pet receive dental care (free dental assessment, information on how to properly care for your pet’s teeth and a dental estimate if any cleanings/extractions are needed).

When your pet is nearing his or her senior years (starting at 6 + years), we will recommend a baseline exam and diagnostic workup, so we’ll know what’s normal for your pet. This will enable us to keep track of any changes that are occurring or to be able to keep on top of them. Please let us know if you’ve noticed any physical or behavioural changes in your pet, as well as any other concerns you might have, that we may be able to look further into or put your mind to rest on as a normal change at your pet’s age.

Call us today to schedule a wellness examination for your senior pet! If you have any questions about our senior wellness panel, please give us a call at (902) 463-7610.
