Dog Anal Gland Expression
Normal anal glands are fluid-filled sacs on either side of the rectum that provide lubrication when your dog has a bowel movement, some dogs develop sacs which contain a thicker fluid, that does not easily express when they pass stool. This can lead to a buildup of extra pungent material that your pet cannot pass naturally. This can cause a great deal of discomfort for your pet and if left untreated could lead to infection of the anal sac.
Should I drain my dog’s anal glands at home?
It is always best to have your veterinary professional do this for you. An improper expression can lead to ruptured glands or incomplete draining of fluid, this can be quite painful and can result in further complications.
If my dog scoots on the carpet a lot, does this mean their anal glands are impacted?
When a dog scoots on the carpet it does not necessarily mean that their glands are affected. They may be uncomfortable or overfull and should be assessed by a veterinary professional.
