Dogs have two glands located at 5 and 7 o’clock positions relative to the anus that release a strong-smelling secretion. Anal glands can fill up to the extent that they become painful and may become infected. Symptomatically you may see your dog scooting his bum across the ground or licking the anal area.

Should I drain my dog’s anal glands at home?

We recommend anal gland expression be performed by your Veterinarian. If anal gland expression is performed improperly you may cause harm.

If my dog scoots on the carpet a lot, does this mean their anal glands are impacted?

Anal gland problems are likely the number one cause of scooting, however, issues like allergies, fleas, internal parasites are also possibilities to consider.
