Dog Heartworm Test

While Nova Scotia may not be considered a heartworm endemic area, often times our pets travel with us to areas where heartworm may be a concern. We offer in-house screening for clients wishing to have their pet tested or concerned their pet has been exposed. We offer to test in conjunction with one of the many monthly products available for prevention of this harmful parasite.

What are the symptoms of heartworm in a dog?

Coughing is the most common symptom as well as exercise intolerance, weight loss and fainting.

How do dogs get heartworm?

Heartworm is transmitted via a bite from a mosquito that is carrying the parasite that causes heartworm (dirofilariasis).

What are the treatment options for heartworm?

Treatment options include adulticides and larvicides. Specific products can be discussed with your Veterinarian.

Why is the recovery and heartworm treatment challenging?

Depending on the number of worms present the treatment causes the worms to die and begin to float through the circulation system. The dead worms can lodge in blood vessels blocking blood flow. The body can also react in an allergic-like way to the drug administered or to the degrading dead worms.
