Blood Tests for Cats

Our hospital provides complete in-house blood testing capabilities, so we are able to quickly obtain results to help us diagnose problems. We also work with an external lab which gives us access to numerous tests and specialists for challenging cases.

Why does my kitty need a blood screen?

Blood testing is used in healthy cats as a way to screen for any sign of early disease that may not be obvious. Diagnostic testing is done to identify specific illnesses and diseases. Therapeutic blood monitoring is helpful to regulate drug levels and evaluate disease progression over time.

How long does it take to get blood test results?

We can perform in-house blood testing and get results the same day. If we send to an outside lab it will take at least 24 hours depending on the tests.

What precautions should I take before a blood test?

Sometimes fasting may be required and we will let you know if that is the case. To check levels of medication your pet is taking the blood should be collected 4 – 6 hours after giving medication.

How often should blood tests be done?

Depending on what we are checking, it could be every 6 months or yearly.

Does your clinic perform urinalysis?

We will do a urinalysis in-house to check for bladder infections, kidney function, blood or sugar or even signs of urinary crystals.
